Stupid Should be Expensive - Part II

Stupid Should be Expensive - Part II

Technically called a day beacon, but commonly referred to as channel markers, these aids to navigation are placed by the Coast Guard. Delineated by shape, color, and number any boater should know the basics:

  • Red markers are triangular and even numbered
  • Green markers are square and odd numbered
  • Numbers increase as you move closer to the termination of the channel. (The furthest away would be a #1 or #2)
  • The common rule is red, right, return which means always keep the red marker to your right, or starboard, when returning to port

This marker sits outside Sister Creek in Marathon in the Florida Keys. The pass is used frequently in my Mac Travis series. This is the area where we used to stay when visiting the Keys, and then owned a vacation rental before moving to Big Pine Key.

Just outside this marker is a large rock. The marker should be enough for most, but apparently some need a refresher on the rules of the road.
